Mid-Band Ethernet delivers 2-Mbps to 45-Mbps over a twisted copper pair, which allows Metro Ethernet to extend well beyond its constricting fiber footprint. Communications companies are now discussing whether their T1s will go the way of the dinosaur because of this development. The new Mid-Band Ethernet is threatening the extinction of the mighty T1, which has been the staple for small to medium businesses (or SMBs) for the past 40+ years. I will give you 4 reasons why I think the T1 will be extinct with in the next 5 years. Vertical Systems Group says that total revenue for fiber-based U.S. Mid-Band + Ethernet services during the next five years is projected to be in excess of $14 billion. 1) Small to medium businesses (the primary users of T1s) are requiring more and more bandwidth for their networks and servers. The internet continues to be mission critical for many small to medium businesses and as their websites become larger and more involved, a simple single T1 may no longer handle the bandwidth requirements for many of these SMBs in the next few years. Businesses are going to require more and more bandwidth with more scalability and Mid-Band Ethernet is positioned to be able to flex and handle that load. |

2) Mid-Band Ethernet is less expensive than a data T1 both for the customer and the carriers. With the T1 service, carriers are experiencing severe pricing cuts due to competition and are seeing their profit margins on these T1s dwindling down to next to nothing. On the other hand, Mid-Band Ethernet providers are noticing that Mid-Band Ethernet equipment is paying for itself in less than 4 months, which takes, into consideration for start-up costs, and installation costs, CO costs, and backhaul bandwidth costs. Carriers are experiencing almost an 85% margin on their Mid-Band Ethernet line of services. The average savings on a 5-Mbps Mid-Band Ethernet circuit vs. a triple bonded T1(4.5-Mbps) is roughly 60% on a monthly basis. 3) Mid-Band Ethernet is easily scaleable. This is both a benefit to the consumer and the carriers alike. When a customer wants to increase from a T1 to a bonded or triple bonded T1, the carrier has to roll out the trucks in order to change out/modify the customer’s hardware interface. Mid-Band Ethernet customers wanting to increase their bandwidth can virtually do that over the telephone and the carrier can increase customer bandwidth without having to change out the hardware interface. This saves the customer and carrier time, effort, and manpower, not to mention the speed in which it can be completed. |

4) Mid-band Ethernet is much more easily understood than the T1 infrastructure. Mid-Band Ethernet can be managed very easily thus lowering the SMB’s IT costs significantly over short period of time. In addition, the SMB’s IT department can manage their network over the Mid-Band Ethernet circuit much quicker because of the fact that the bandwidth is generally much higher as opposed to a T1. Carriers do not have to have as many highly trained technicians as they transition to Mid-Band Ethernet products due to the fact that Mid-Band Ethernet is easily scaleable and much of the changes can be done remotely. In summation, Mid-Band Ethernet is more desired by consumers and carriers alike. The above reasons will put a lot of pressure on the data T1s to be able to have any benefit or value to either the consumers or carriers. T1s will still have a place and value in the voice world (until VoIP overruns that too) and some who are resistant to change. While SMBs increase their need for more bandwidth, it appears that Mid-Band and higher Ethernet will be the easy choice to make for consumers. |
